Private sector needed to help meet power self-sufficiency
To close BC's forecast energy deficit, meet growing demand and keep rates reasonable, B.C. must be open to the development of a number of new, cost-effective generation resources. Renewable resources such as wind and run-of-the-river hydro can do part of the job, but new large and reliable resources will also be required including thermal and hydro generation facilities and the associated transmission lines.

BC Hydro awards EPAs: media

BC Hydro has agreed to buy more than 7,000 gigawatt hours of power from independent producers in an effort to end the province's reliance on imported electricity. Thirty-eight projects ranging in size from a 1,612-GWh-per-year coal and biomass project in Tumbler Ridge to the four-GWh per-year Eldorado Reservoir hydroelectric project near Kelowna were promised energy purchase agreements.

We pass rows of blue recycling boxes on our streets and don't give them a second glance. For most of us, recycling is second nature. But it wasn't always the case. "Reduce, re-use, recycle" took us a few years to adopt. Imagine if we could be as aware of energy issues and embrace electricity conservation in the same way that we've adopted our blue boxes.

The Commercial Energy Consumers lobby group, in an attempt to downplay economic liability of overhead power lines, said the risk of a child getting leukemia as a result of exposure to electromagnetic fields was so low the cost in dollars would be inconsequential.The treasurer of South Delta secondary's Parent Advisory Council said placing a dollar value on a child is disturbing. BC Hydro receives bids from across BC in 2006 Open Call for Power
BC Hydro has received bids for 53 separate projects from 37 independent power producers in response to the 2006 Open Call for Power. The projects submitted include electricity generation from both small and large facilities, include hydro, wind, biomass and coal resources and represent approximately 1,800MW. Firm energy tendered totals approximately 6,500 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, enough power to supply 650,000 homes.

Hillsborough announces coal generation project
Hillsborough Resources has announced a proposal to develop an energy generation project in Northeast British Columbia with AES Pacific, Inc., under the name AESWapiti Energy (“AESWapiti”). The $350 million energy generation project would include a 165 MW thermal electric power plant and a 35 kilometre, 230 kV transmission line, and would have a contemplated project life of at least 40 years. Fuel for the energy generation facility would be supplied by the Wapiti coal mine operated by Hillsborough. The Wapiti coal property is located between Tumbler Ridge and Dawson Creek.
