Our View: Falling on deaf
ears
|
It's unclear how many sympathetic ears regional district
directors opposed to methane drilling are going to find at the Union
of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM). In a room full of right-leaning
mayors from mostly small to mid-size towns, there's probably not
going to be too many who would object to new industry setting up
shop in their boundaries. But sympathy is what the Regional District
of Comox-Strathcona is going to solicit from the UBCM. The
regional district is taking to the UBCM its objections to Quinsam
Coal's plans to drill for coalbed methane. The majority of rural
directors on the board have put the district on record as opposing
the plan and they're going to ask the UBCM to request the provincial
government "issue no further drilling licences, tenures or other
permits for coalbed methane exploration until local communities,
their local government and First Nations are consulted and their
concerns are fully considered and until adequate policies,
regulations and guidelines are enacted to ensure the safe
development of coal bed methane in the province of B.C." Quinsam
Coal president David Slater said the district's efforts are a waste
of time. The jurisdiction over the drilling lies with the province
and the process already involves community consultation. Many
mayors across B.C. would be happy if Quinsam Coal asked to drill in
their areas.
