About CBMwatch.ca |
|
CBMwatch.ca is a communications initiative intended to provide a hub, a central place, for citizen concerns about coalbed methane (CBM) activities in British Columbia. The provincial government has removed policy and regulatory "impediments" to CBM production, and set up economic stimulants to the industry. The government has recently sold drilling permits worth tens of millions of dollars. The companies which have paid that money now expect to start drilling. Yet CBM exploration and production is a very messy business, with the potential for devastating impacts where it takes place. CBM activities are particularly consequential with respect to water - streams, water tables and other aspects of local hydrology are vulnerable. No consultation has taken place with the communities and regions in which this activity is targeted in BC. No discussion has taken place within those communities. CBMwatch.ca is designed to facilitate discussions, and to bring affected communities together. It will allow one region to share information and experiences with others. Residents, landowners, and municipal leaders will discover in CBMwatch a resource that becomes essential in effective citizen participation as CBM is rolled out in one region after another. If you have comments or suggestions, please let us know. This site is only useful if it is being used. Email info@cbmwatch.ca
