Bute Inlet Review Panel disbanded; New panel to be appointed if EA continues

Public Notice, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, March 18, 2011

BUTE INLET HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT - REVIEW PANEL DISBANDED

The Panel established under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (the Act) to conduct the environmental assessment of the proposed Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project (the project) in British Columbia has been disbanded.

Bute Hydro Inc. has proposed to construct 17 run-of-river hydroelectric facilities in the vicinity of Bute Inlet. The project was referred to a panel review in May 2009 and the Panel appointed in the summer of 2009. As Bute Hydro Inc. does not currently intend to move forward with the environmental assessment process, the Minister of the Environment has decided to disband the Panel and release the Panel members from their obligations under the Act.

The environmental assessment of the project is not, however, being terminated. Should the proponent decide at a later date to proceed with the environmental assessment for the project, the Minister of the Environment would appoint a new Panel to conduct the review.
