Energy & Mines, December 2011
The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines (the Ministry) is undertaking a review of the tenure provisions of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act (the Act) and its regulations, which provide the statutory framework for the administration of rights to Crown owned subsurface petroleum and natural gas resources.
In September 2011, the Ministry released the Discussion Paper on the Tenure Provisions of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act and Regulations (Discussion Paper). The purpose of the Discussion Paper was to seek input from interested parties on changes to the Act and Regulations that would help improve the tenure system. The period for submitting comments closed October 17, 2011.
The Ministry received a broad range of responses from the petroleum and natural gas industry, First Nations, local governments, private land owners and public policy groups. The Ministry has reviewed all of the comments received and has posted a summary of them on its website at: http://www.empr.gov.bc.ca/Titles/OGTitles/OtherPublications/Pages/default.aspx
The comments received will help inform the Ministry’s review of the Act and its regulations. The Ministry will assess possible changes to the petroleum and natural gas tenure system in relation to how they would support Provincial strategies and Ministry objectives for British Columbia’s energy sector.
The Ministry wishes to thank everyone who submitted comments on the discussion paper.
